GAA Ladies Bring It On Home

The Mairead Farrells (Máiréad Ní Fhearghail) Ladies Football Club of  Philadelphia became the 2010 North American Senior Football Champions over Labor Day weekend at the national GAA games at Chicago’s Gaelic Park. The footballers had already won the Philadelphia senior football title a few weeks before.

The team they beat in the city match-up, the Notre Dames, also brought home a trophy from Chicago. This team is now the 2010 North American Intermediate Football Champions. They’ll both be defending their titles next year in San Francisco.

Notre Dames player Eileen McElroy is also a talented photographer and she shared some photos from the ladies’ competition and the men’s matches featuring Philly GAA teams the Kevin Barrys and the Young Irelanders. The men didn’t bring home trophies, but they fought like Celtic tigers.

    Hi there,

    My name is Mairéad Trainor from County Down and I have started the J1 application for travelling to America in the forthcoming Summer. I am a really keen football player and I definitely want to join a team while I’m there. I currently play for Down County Ladies and my college team, St. Marys Teaching College Belfast and my local club which is Burren. I played for Down minors and Down seniors three years ago however I did take the last two years out due to starting university. I have won senior player of the year for my club twice and have captained my minor team. This year past I got to the championship final with my club (we lost but should have won ;) and we got to the league final and won it.

    I hope from this you can see that I am a very keen sportsperson and I am dying to get involved with a team in America! I am also travelling with another girl Anne Marie McDaid from outside Letterkenny in Donegal and another girl Meadhbha Ní Cheara from outside Omagh in Tyrone. If you have any feedback of useful information for me I would greatly appreciate you getting back to me. So excited to hit America & heard loads about this team!
