The late, great musician and folklorist Mick Moloney, who died last summer at the age of 77, performed at the Irish Center in Philadelphia (now known as the Commodore Barry Arts and Cultural Center) many times over the last several decades.
When Mick came to the Center, he typically brought along with him some of the finest musical accompanists anyone could possibly wish for or imagine.
Back in April 2016, he returned to the Center for a grand show, and this time he was accompanied by singer-guitarist Robbie O’Connell and accordionist James Keane. Suffice to say, they brought out the best and the funniest in each other in an evening of stories and songs on the ballroom stage. There was, predictably, quite a crowd.
And that man could truly spin a yarn, as witness this video in which he tells of his earliest associations with the Irish Center, the friends he met along the way, and so much more. It takes a while before he and his companions actually get to the tune. (No problem there … the story is well worth a listen.)
But we thought we would throw it out to you this time, just for fun. Song of the Week fans: Name that tune in English!
