Early in the recent Irish Center benefit for beloved local musician Pat Kildea, Bernadette Browne Mahr, one of the organizers, said that the original fundraising goal was $10,000. The ballroom was already packed with supporters at that time. However, she added, “At this point, we’re probably good for $30,000.”
By the event’s end, that tally had been increased yet again, to something more like $40,000.
Kildea is recovering from life-threatening medical issues, entailing weeks in the hospital and multiple surgeries.
“We had donations from all of the county societies,” Mahr said, “and we had sold 200 tickets ahead of time. People have just been so generous with their donations. Our original goal of $10,000 just flew by.”
In addition to ticket sales and donations, there was a 50-50, one large wheelbarrow of cheer, several other gift baskets, a drawing for a piece of exquisite jewelry, and tables full of raffle items.
Exceeding that initial goal was gratifying to Pat Kildea’s friends, but it probably shouldn’t have been a surprise. Kildea and family arrived at the event, the guest of honor in a wheelchair, greeted by a resounding and standing ovation.
Among those honoring him were several musicians, who donated their time and talent to support one of their own. They included Gary O’Neill from Stall the Digger, Pat Ward, Fintan Malone, Michael Boyce, John McGillian, Tim Trahey, Deaglan Mac Lochlainn, Vincent Gallagher, Jack Lynch, and Paul Moore. And a big shout out to our sound guys: Josh Matelski from The Natterjacks, and James Gilboyne from Stall the Digger.
To everyone’s surprise, a smiling Pat Kildea gingerly took to the stage and added his voice to the musical fun.
Truly a great night, and a great honor for a great man.
